Summary: Great for editing and archiving pics
Comment: This is the first time I've used a full-fledged photo editing program. In the past I merely used Paint to resize pics for my website. With Photoshop Elements I can do much more. But since I'm new to the program, I'm doing the equivalent of merely driving to the grocery store in a Lamborghini. Once I get familiar with the program, I'll hit top speed on the open road. I love the way Photoshop retrieves my pics from my iPhone and how it archives photos to their website. However, 2Gb of space is just not enough! I still haven't tried Premiere Elements yet, but I'm working on it!

Summary: Elements in passing
Comment: I have CS2 and love it, but can not affort to continue tha upgrades, so I bought Elements V-7. It is different but the same. As soon as I get used to the different layout, I think I will be very happy.

Summary: PS Elements 7 rescues many photos for me
Comment: The proof is in the pudding, or picture, so I've uploaded "before" and "after" shots of a carshow photo for comparison. The "before" copy is as it came from the camera and the "after" one has been enhanced by PS Elements 7.

They're online at Flickr (Yahoo! account works) and if you want to see the comparisons, go there and search for frank011-before or frank011-after, then click on "all sizes" to get the full-screen version.

Actually, I'm not in the habit of reviewing products, feeling there are many more astute reviewers out there handling that job. But PS Elements 7 has been getting a lot of one-star recs and that is (IMHO) not too good; Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 is a much better product than these low ratings might indicate.

Moving right along, one feature in PS Elements 7 that I'm finding very usefull is the guided tour area. I've never been able to adjust color very well, but in the guided area I'm now able to bring out color more gradually and subtly, fixing otherwise overcast and dull photos.

Also, the shadows and brightening capabilites are rescuing a lot of photos that would be junk if left as is. True, these can be adjusted in the other Elements modes, and I switch back and forth between them frequently, but I can honestly say the guided tour area has been a big help.

But enough with the words ... go take a look at the comparison photos and see if Elements does the job ... Cheers ... David

Summary: Premier Elements 7 Super for AVCHD! Not so great for MP4 (avc H.264)
Comment: I quit upgrading my Photoshop several versions ago as I have relied more and more on Google's Picasa (which is free and VERY user friendly but in no way compares to the rich feature set of Photoshop...but it works for 90% of what I do)

As for the Premier Elements 7: I am NOT a newbie to video editing, in fact I have been an avid user of Adobe Premier Elements for some time now...with ver. 4 being the most recent before the version 7 purchase. Let me get this out in the open, I was disgusted with Adobe PE7 at first because I was trying to edit and burn footage from my same old camcorders....footage that Adobe PE3 and 4 handled just fine. I have tried MULTIPLE projects now and have yet to be able to render or burn a DVD using the MP4 (avc H.264) footage from my Sanyo Xacti or my Samsung NV24HD. Even worse I cannot keep a project of any size open long enough to do any editing before the program gives me a "low on memory" warning and then crashes! Version 4 was crazy enough, as I was always sure to hit the "save" button many times while editing, but this version 7 is a joke for these formats. I can't even add the MP4 files to the time-line without it crashing.

Now for the good part and why I give this release a 4 star. I was asked by a buddy to edit and burn some youth football footage from his newly acquired Canon HF10 with SDHC card. I was excited. Although I had no clue what an .mts file was Adobe PE 7 not only recognized it and imported it quickly...but I proceeded to edit both video and audio (together and separately)as well as burn to a regular DVD (not BluRay). It was a great experience. The only reason I won't give this a 5 star is that Adobe still shows this PE7 program as being compatible with MP4 and I beg to differ as a user...but if you are going the direction I want to go, AVCHD and BluRay, etc...Adobe did something right in this category. I will add that while i am not a big fan of the GUI of Pinnacle Studio Plus 12 it has handled ALL of my format types without a problem. I am running Vista Basic on a Celeron 1.60Ghz processor (Dell Inspiron 530 desktop) with 4GB of ram.

Comment: For the price there are no better photo & video editting software. Version 7 has some tutorials but you really need much more to make best usage of these very powerful programs, including manual(s) & community college noncredit courses, if available. Belonging to a camera club would also help. Of course, there is no substitute for trail & error experimenting.

Useful: Backup/Recovery Software

Before you decide on a backup or recovery program, you need to know a few things:
  • How many computers need the software? Generally, these types of programs are sold for use on only a single computer. If your small office has multiple systems, you may need to purchase multiple licenses that can increase your cost significantly.
  • Which type of backup option would work best for me? You need to examine which of the options available best suit your needs. Obviously, if you don't use removable media, you may not want to choose that option. Also, if you don't feel secure using an online-based option, you may want to avoid it as well.
